Are you an experienced debater or established debating coach interested in supporting enthusiastic and talented young people to further develop their public speaking and oratory skills?

Debating is a popular co-curricular choice at Highgate and it is already ably and enthusiastically supported by members of the Teaching staff. This new role will help further expand our provision, allowing those pupils who are particularly keen on developing their oratory and teamwork skills, both in the process of rigorous training and via the challenges of external competition.

The successful candidate will support our existing, internal debating provision for pupils aged 11 to 18, including house debating competitions and co-curricular debating clubs.

As well as launching a new competitive debating programme (Junior and Senior) geared towards preparing pupils for inter-school and other national competitions.

The Department

Highgate has over 150 co-curricular activities, clubs and societies on offer in the Senior School to ensure pupils get to try something different, discover a new hobby and make new friends.

Time is set aside each week for all pupils to take part in at least one co-curricular activity of their choice, and we’re always expanding and adapting our offering to make sure there’s something to suit everyone’s interests.

Job Description
  • Leading a high-performance Debating programme for pupils aged 11-18.
  • Planning training sessions twice weekly (after school) for those pupils (Junior/Senior) preparing to enter debating competitions.
  • Organising external competition entries.
  • Attending external competitions as necessary.
  • Advising where appropriate on existing internal debating provision.
  • Developing future plans for the Debating programme (particularly as it pertains to external competitive debate).
  • Depending on the candidate’s experience there is scope to develop this role further.

The Staff Wellbeing Committee, with representatives across the School, meets regularly to drive forward initiatives, and a selection of staff have been trained as Mental-Health First Aiders.

Charitable work and sustainability

As an independent school, we want to use our position as a charity effectively: to make high-quality education accessible to as many children as possible – through our bursary programme at Highgate and through our work with local state schools. We have partnerships with over 60 state schools across 7 London boroughs, and we are the principal educational sponsor for London Academy of Excellence, Tottenham – an academically-selective state sixth form in a community where such opportunities are lacking.

Alongside this, our staff and pupils undertake charitable activities throughout the year. These range from staff giving up their time to neighbourhood schools and charitable organisations, focused fundraising campaigns, to pupils undertaking community work in the local area or further afield.

As a school, we have a central role to play in educating our pupils, staff and parents about the importance of environmental sustainability. We are taking positive action to adapt our operational performance to tackle the negative effects of climate change. As this role will have regular unsupervised contact with children you must, if appointed, comply with Highgate’s Safeguarding Policy and Staff Code of Conduct.
